RADICAL UTOPIAN WORKSPACE (2023)

INSTALLATION/PERFORMANCE/WORKSHOP

Gallery, open doors, costume rack with free clothing, tropical punch fountain, tomato jelly

RADICAL UTOPIAN WORKSPACE transformed a gallery into a temporary ecosystem where visitors were invited to linger, play, and gradually become part of an unfolding fiction. With the doors left open throughout the evening, the work welcomed families, children, neighbours, and passersby into a soft landscape of shimmering curtains, shifting light, sweet scents, tropical punch, wobbling tomato jelly, and freely available costumes.

Rather than assigning audiences a role, the work allowed participation to emerge through small acts of curiosity. Trying on an unfamiliar outfit. Discovering a handwritten note hidden inside a garment. Following glitter-covered frogs through the space. Sitting still long enough to notice that the atmosphere itself was slowly changing.

The installation unfolded according to its own tidal rhythm. Colours shifted, sounds drifted, conversations formed and dissolved, and the room continuously transformed without announcing its transitions. Performance was distributed across visitors, objects, smells, textures, and fleeting encounters, allowing fiction to emerge through collective presence rather than scripted events.

Neither exhibition nor workshop nor performance, RADICAL UTOPIAN WORKSPACE functioned as a speculative social environment where hospitality became an artistic material and transformation remained delightfully unresolved. The evening concluded with the rabbit’s last dance, before the space quietly returned to itself.

A soft, mellow, shifting, explosive space. Sit down. Ignore gravity. Absorb. Polymorph. Lick your emotions.

Shimmering curtains, colors changing. Smells of something sickly sweet, ocean breeze and black sail diffusers. Tropical juice punch from the fountain trickling down into sticky cups. Tomato jelly wobbling in the afternoon breeze.

Our first guests peeked through the fringe curtains five minutes after opening time. Families, children. Frogs were moving through the space in different formations. Small faces and hands covered in glittering materials.

Pick an outfit you fancy. Feel free to ignore the personal message attached to the hem by a small paper clip.

Slowly, the atmosphere is changing, like a tiny replica of the tides of day and night around us. 20:55 marks the moment of the rabbit’s last dance.
